The Department of Economics has one core mission: to train both graduate and undergraduate students in the economic way of thinking and market process. Our internationally recognized faculty will guide your exploration of economic theory, equipping you with the analytical decision-making skills to prepare you to succeed in careers in business, public policy, government service, data management, as well as providing a solid foundation for future doctoral studies in economics.

The Economics BS is designed for those seeking a more quantitative study of economics.

Major-Specific Graduation Requirements

All courses required in the major (Core and major electives) must be completed with a minimum grade of “C-“. The following courses in Preparation for the Major must be completed with a “C” or better: MATH 30 (or MATH 30X ) and a Statistics course.

1. Complete the Baccalaureate Degree Requirements

Students must satisfy the specific degree requirements for their undergraduate major and fulfill the following University degree requirements:

Academic (program total units with an average 2.0 GPA - “C” or better)
General Education (GE) (34 Lower Division + 9 Upper Division)
American Institutions (AI) (0-6 units) (may be satisfied in GE Areas 3A, 3B, 4, UD 3, or UD 4)
Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) 3 units (see Writing in the Disciplines)
Physical Education (PE) (0-2 units)
Units in Residence (30 units, including 24 upper division and 12 in major)
Upper Division Units (40 units, including 12 upper div in major for BA, 18 upper div in major for BS)

Upper Division Economics Electives (20 units)

Select any 100-level courses within the Department of Economics with the exception of ECON 109 , which is NOT intended for majors.

Alternatively, to pursue a specialization in Data Analytics, students must complete two out of the following four elective courses: ECON 166 , ECON 138 , ECON 195 , and ECON 197 . In addition, students must complete 12 units of 100-level economics electives (excluding ECON 109 ).

4. University Electives (25 units)

A minor in a field recommended by the advisor is encouraged.
