HIST 110A - History of Japan 4 units Development of state and society from prehistoric times to 1750. Major topics include the controversy over the origins of the Japanese people; the adaptation of Chinese cultural, religious, and political models; the role of the emperor in state formation; the classical era of Japanese culture during the Heian period; the rise of the samurai elites; and the development of military rule under the shoguns.
