Overview
The Department of Public Health prepares leaders and practitioners who promote health and improve the environments in which we live, work, learn, and play. We strive to embrace a Teacher-Scholar-Practitioner Model through student, alumni, faculty, and community engagement to advance practices in public health and recreation fields.
Our undergraduate curriculum in examines multiple dimensions and determinants of health (e.g., physical, emotional, social, environmental, and spiritual) and the scientific and practical basis for understanding and promoting health at the population level (including epidemiology, policy development and advocacy, and community health) to create optimal, conditions for health and wellbeing for all. The undergraduate program prepares students for entry level careers in public health and allied health services in addition to providing a solid foundation for graduate studies in many disciplines. The mission of the BS in Public Health is to foster an environment that embraces diversity and inspires active, critical, interdisciplinary teaching and learning to improve population health.
Founded in 1970, the Master of Public Health (MPH) program has been accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) since 1974 and is offered in two formats. The campus format is a regular session and offers the flexibility to complete the program full or part-time. The synchronous online/hybrid format is offered through the College of Professional and Global Engagement as a cohort model completed in two years. MPH students engage in an integrated program of learning, scholarship, and internships in partnership with a diverse network of community agencies.
The Public Health undergraduate and graduate programs incorporate student-centered, high impact, and career-focused curricula with intention and commitment to community diversity, health promotion, social justice, and interdisciplinary evidence-based approaches to solve real-world contemporary problems.
