ENGL 120 - World Theatre I

Examines the historical roots, many manifestations, and diversity of theatrical performances with particular attention to theatre’s role within and between cultures. Students will survey key periods in the history of theatre from antiquity to the first part of the twentieth century; examine plays, playwrights, political contexts, and staging practices from across the world that led to the development of theatre as we know it today; contextualize performances within the cultures that produced them to understand how theatre and culture mutually influence each other; and examine what it means to write and represent the past through studies of performance historiography.
