Mechanical Engineering BS + MS (Pending Chancellor’s Office approval)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Programs

This program is pending Chancellor’s Office approval.

The Mechanical Engineering Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Programs (Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education) Program provides students the opportunities to earn their Mechanical Engineering, BS  and Mechanical Engineering, MS  degrees simultaneously, completing both degrees in five years. Through this pathway, students can progress seamlessly from undergraduate to graduate status with a simplified application process and no application fee. By double-counting 9 units toward both degrees, students can complete the BS and MS in less time compared to pursuing the programs separately. This accelerated timeline provides significant cost savings and positions graduates for advanced career opportunities in mechanical engineering and related fields.

Total SAGE Program Units (BS + MS): 146

For more information, contact the SAGE Scholars Program Coordinator.

Admission Requirements

Students must adhere to the following admissions requirements:

  • Students must successfully complete a minimum of 60 undergraduate degree applicable units and not more than 120 undergraduate degree applicable units at the time of admission into the Mechanical Engineering SAGE program.

  • SAGE students in the undergraduate career must have completed all lower division courses (designated as 0-99, including lower division general education courses and American Institutions courses) BEFORE transitioning into the SAGE graduate degree objective status.

  • Students must be enrolled in or have completed the undergraduate Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (Area Z/100W prior to admission into the Mechanical Engineering SAGE program);

  • Students must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA at the time of admission into the SAGE program; and,

  • Complete all BSME junior-level courses (ME 106 ME 114 ME 154 ) with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Students who have reached up to their first semester as classified seniors will remain eligible for entry into the Mechanical Engineering SAGE program. Second semester, senior-level students enrolled in the term they expect to graduate from their baccalaureate degree are not eligible to enter the Mechanical Engineering SAGE program as these students will not gain the accelerated graduate-level benefit offered through the Mechanical Engineering SAGE blended program option.

Graduate Standing Requirements

Requirements for program continuation and advancement to candidacy in the graduate program include:

  • Meet every semester with an academic advisor to plan and track coursework and graduate status. Once the BSME degree is conferred, students meet every semester with their graduate advisor to plan a formal course of study.

  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher and in Major Preparation and Major Required listed courses, no individual grade below a C. Students in the first four years of the program who do not maintain these standards will be withdrawn from the SAGE Scholars program and returned to the non-SAGE program.

  • The proposed graduate program must be approved by the Mechanical Engineering graduate coordinator before the student may be considered a candidate for the MS degree.

  • Requirements are waived or satisfied with required courses in the major: GE Areas 1B, 5, 3B, UD 2or5, UD 3, UD 4 and Physical Education. Alternate courses that may satisfy these requirements are not counted in the calculation of the 120 SAGE program-applicable units.

Mechanical Engineering, BS (116 units)

Students must satisfy all of the major and Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements , which includes unit, GPA, and residency requirements as well as the below identified General Education , American Institutions, Graduation Writing Assessment, and Physical Education requirements. Courses that meet Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements are noted with an area designation (see Course Note Abbreviations ).

Exceptions for University Graduation Requirements  apply to this major.

University Requirements (18 units)

The Lower and Upper Division General Education requirements may be satisfied by coursework outlined below. To satisfy the Lower and Upper Division General Education, students must pass ENGR 100W  with a grade of “C” or better (“C-” not accepted).

GE Areas  1C, 1A, 3A, two 4/American Institutions  (US123), and 6 (18 units)

Major Preparation (33 units)

Major Requirements (65 units)

Capstone Courses

Complete one course from:

Mechanical Engineering MS (30 units)

Core Courses (9 units)

Electives (15 units)

Elective courses must be selected in consultation with the Graduate Program Advisor.

Culminating Experience (6 units)

Program departments are required to certify when Plan A or Plan B has been completed satisfactorily via the Verification of Culminating Experience form.

Complete One Option (Plan A or Plan B):

Total Units Required (146 Units)

Note: The standalone Mechanical Engineering, BS  program requires 6 units of approved Technical Electives. Students satisfy this requirement in the SAGE Scholars Program by completing 6 units required within the Area of Specialization/Approved Electives in the Mechanical Engineering, MS  degree. In addition, the standalone BSME program requires one Capstone project (3 units). SAGE students can use the three-unit Capstone course for MSME technical electives.

These 9 units (3 units of Capstone course, and 6 units of Technical Electives) are considered to count toward both the graduate and undergraduate degrees, thus allowing SAGE students to meet the minimum unit requirements for both degrees. Of these double-counted units, no more than 6 may be taken at the undergraduate level or from the undergraduate portion of co-located courses. Students must earn a grade of B or better in each course to have it count toward both degrees.
