Information Science and Data Analytics, BS


Fully Online Degree Completion Program

The Bachelor of Science Information Science and Data Analytics (BS ISDA), offered by the School of Information, prepares students to work with data, technology, and people. BS ISDA majors attain skills that are applicable to a variety of careers involving analytics, visualization, big data, digital curation, digital assets management, knowledge management, information architecture, documents and records management, health care, education, and emerging technologies-all geared toward the information needs of users. Information Science and Data Analytics graduates are utilized by organizations to organize data and interpret the significance of data in a way that can be easily understood and used by others. They focus on what a person can do with an app rather than what an app does.

Program Delivery

The program is delivered completely online via Canvas. Classes will be delivered asynchronously. Where needed, virtual labs will be used.

Program Roadmaps

Transfer Units (60 units)


All applicants are required to have completed at least 60 transferable semester or 90 quarter units with an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better. Applicants should also have completed all four CSU-approved Basics Skills courses, each with a C- or better:

(A1) Oral Communication/Speech
(A2) Written English Composition
(A3) Critical Thinking/Logic
(B4) Math/Quantitative Reasoning (above the level of intermediate algebra)

It is recommended that students complete all lower division General Education and the Physical Education requirement before applying for admissions.

University Requirements


Students must satisfy all of the major and Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements , which includes unit, GPA, and residency requirements as well as the below identified General Education , American Institutions, Graduation Writing Assessment and Physical Education requirements. Courses that meet Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements are noted with an area designation (see Course Abbreviations ).

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (3 units)


At SJSU, students must pass both the SJSU Writing Skills Test (WST) and a 100W course. Exceptions to the GWAR may be found at Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) .

A grade of C or better (C- not accepted) is required to meet graduation requirement.

Major Preparation (4-5 units)


Courses may transferred from community colleges or any university. Courses must be passed with a grade of C- or better.

Core Courses (36 units)


All classes are infused with hands-on, real-world, collaborative projects to support students developing portfolios that demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Where necessary, students will have access to virtual labs such as INFOSEC, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Computing.

Upper Division Major Electives (12 units)


Electives can be selected from upper division courses or from approved graduate courses in the School of Information  in areas such as Health Data Analytics, Enterprise Content Management and Digital Preservation, Digital Curation, Digital Assets Management, Digital Forensics, Problem Solving with Data.

If electives from the School of Information  graduate courses are used to meet the elective requirements, the courses can only be used for the bachelor’s degree and cannot be later applied to any graduate degree.
