Teacher Librarian Credential

The Teacher Librarian Credential program, offered by the Department of Teacher Education , will prepare you for the next step in your teaching career as a library media specialist.

Specialized Skills for K - 12 Careers

Graduates of the Teacher Librarian program at the SJSU School of Information will emerge with a specialization in the functions and skills necessary for employment in K - 12 schools including collaboration, technology leadership, and program administration.

As a teacher librarian, you’ll be a teacher, a librarian, and an instructional partner.

Credential + MLIS Degree

Students in the Teacher Librarian program can pursue both their Teacher Librarian Services Credential and Library and Information Science, MLIS  degree! Teacher librarianship is one of the exciting career pathways students can follow within the MLIS program, which is fully accredited by the American Library Association.

Approved Course Work

The Teacher Librarian program course work meets the requirements for the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential. If you live in a state other than California, please check to see if the course work is approved by your home state before undertaking this program.

Required Course Work for the TL Credential


Additional Course Work for the MLIS Degree


To complete the required 43 units of course work for the MLIS degree, students add four more courses to the 31 units of required course work for the Teacher Librarian Services Credential, nine more elective units and INFO 298 - Advanced Topics in Library and Information Science (e-Portfolio)  or INFO 299 - Thesis .
