Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Programs

Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Scholars programs are combined bachelor’s and master’s programs at SJSU. Sometimes they may also satisfy the requirements for a credential. Students in these programs pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree simultaneously. These program allow students to earn graduate credit while in their junior and/or senior year, reducing the number of semesters required for completion of a master’s degree. Objectives

The Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education Scholars Programs offer:

1. To provide an accelerated route to a graduate degree, with simultaneous awarding of both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

2. In most cases, to allow for the possibility of students’ earning graduate credit for several of their senior electives, effectively decreasing the summed unit requirements for both degrees (pending approval by the CSU Chancellor’s Office - expected by late Spring or early Summer 2021).

3. To provide a seamless process whereby students can progress from undergraduate to graduate status without having to apply through the Admissions Office (thereby eliminating the need to pay the application fee).

4. To provide a meaningful capstone experience that in some cases integrates the senior project with the graduate thesis or project.

Admissions Requirements

SAGE programs may require additional admissions requirements.

1. Students must successfully complete a minimum of 60 undergraduate degree applicable units and not more than 120 undergraduate degree applicable units at the time of admission into the SAGE program.

2. Students must be enrolled in or have completed the undergraduate Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (Area Z/100W/GWAR prior to admission into the SAGE program).

3. Students must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of admission into the SAGE program. Note that there may be SAGE programs that require a higher GPA admission standard.

4. Students must have completed all lower division courses (designated as 1-99) BEFORE transitioning into the SAGE graduate degree objective status.

Maintaining Academic Standing in SAGE Programs

SAGE scholars are required to maintain good academic standing per University Policy S16-16. Additionally, SAGE scholars are expected to meet with their SAGE advisor each semester to review their academic progress and standing. When a student does not maintain academic standing as required in their SAGE program, the student will be placed on academic probation in the SAGE program. The advisor will document the probation and outline measures the student must take in order to be removed from SAGE academic probation. Typically, the student will have one semester to address these measures and return to acceptable academic standing. If these measures are not met, the advisor will notify either the Office of the Registrar or the Office of Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations (GAPE) to disqualify the student from the SAGE program; the student will subsequently be placed in the home department’s undergraduate or graduate program to allow completion of the respective degree. For a step by step process from application to graduation for SAGE Scholars students, including the process to opting out of or being disqualified from a SAGE program, view the SAGE Scholars Process document.
