Admissions Requirements

The following chart identifies admission requirements for all degree, credential and certificate programs in the Teacher Education Department. Applicants from countries in which the native language is not English must achieve a minimum English-language proficiency test score as indicated on the Graduate Program Test Requirement web page at GAPE (Graduation Admissions and Program Evaluations).

Requirements for Program Continuation / Advancement to Candidacy

Students must meet the university requirements for candidacy. General university requirements for advancement to candidacy for the MA degree are detailed in the Graduate Policies and Procedures section. Candidacy includes successful completion of the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). For graduate courses that meet the GWAR, refer to the GWAR Course List on the College of Graduate Studies website.

Applicants must also

  • complete successfully 9 units of graduate coursework in the Elementary Education program;
  • demonstrate aptitude for advanced work in professional education as measured by instructor appraisals, evaluation of previous academic work, recommendation by qualified professionals, or other assessments;
  • meet with a graduate advisor to plan a formal course of study. The MA degree approved programs are individually designed to meet specific student objectives.

The proposed graduate program must be approved by the graduate coordinator before the student may be considered a candidate for the MA degree.
