Bilingual Authorization in Spanish

The Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, offered by the Teacher Education Department , prepares both pre-credential and post-credential candidates to serve in dual immersion or bilingual school settings by developing pedagogy, practice and the ability to identify linguistic assets and potential for students, as well as empowering candidates to be changemakers in their own plurilingual context. The Bilingual Authorization in Asian languages is possible through the CSU Asian Language Consortium.

Teacher candidates in the Multiple Subject , Preschool-Grade 3 Early Childhood Education , or Single Subject Credential program may complete the Bilingual Authorization in Spanish by gaining admission to the Critical Bilingual Authorization Program (CBAP), completing the credential requirements the Multiple Subject, PK-3 or Single Subject Credential, and completing the alternative and additional courses as detailed below.

  • CBAP admission requirements include submitting a second Statement of Purpose, which must be written in Spanish. This second essay is not a translation of the first, but it may have overlapping content. The statement should explain one’s interest in bilingual education.
  • CBAP applicants will participate in an interview conducted in Spanish to determine oral proficiency, programmatic dispositions, and alignment with program goals.
  • Upon program completion, CBAP candidates also need to have passed the state test, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) subtest 3 or equivalent, in order to be eligible for the associated bilingual authorization. Alternate options include a BA in Spanish or a degree from a Spanish speaking country.
