Overview

The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences prepares students to become thoughtful, evidence-informed professionals and leaders in speech-language pathology, audiology, and related fields. With more than 50 years of history as one of California’s first programs in the field, the department combines strong academic training with hands-on clinical experience, emphasizing culturally responsive, student-centered learning that reflects the needs of diverse communities. Undergraduate students build a solid foundation for graduate study and careers in communication sciences and disorders, while the nationally accredited Master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology prepares graduates for professional practice, licensure and certification. Students gain real-world experience through opportunities at the on-site Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders and field placements, where they help provide vital speech, language, hearing and swallowing services to the community. Our graduates pursue rewarding careers as speech-language pathologists, audiologists, speech-language pathology assistants, and professionals across education and healthcare.
