Overview
One of the oldest intellectual disciplines, mathematics plays a key role in many fields: cryptography, computer graphics, operations research, engineering and science. Students majoring in mathematics learn to communicate mathematical ideas effectively and to use basic computational skills, mathematical models and technology to solve practical problems. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers both undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare our alumni to work in industry and to teach in secondary schools or community colleges. In addition to a BA in Mathematics, we offer a BS in Applied Mathematics that trains students for more technical careers and incorporates student research projects at the Center for Applied Mathematics, Computation and Statistics (CAMCOS). The BS in Statistics provides foundational training for careers in statistics, data analytics, and data science, and also prepares students for graduate studies in statistics and related fields. We also offer four master’s degrees: an MS and an MA in Mathematics, an MS in Statistics, and an MS in Data Science.
Honors Program
The requirements for mathematics majors to graduate with departmental honors are: (1) at least a 3.0 G.P.A. overall, (2) at least a 3.5 G.P.A. in the major, (3) Completion of MATH 180H - Individual Studies for Honors .
Restriction on Enrollment for Credit
Enrollment for credit in MATH 10 , MATH 12 , MATH 18A , MATH 70 , MATH 71 , MATH 71X , MATH 105 , and MATH 106 will not be allowed for students who have received credit in MATH 19 , MATH 30 , MATH 30X , MATH 31 , MATH 31X , MATH 32 , or MATH 32X , unless the particular course in question is required for the student’s major, minor or credential requirements.
Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA)
Many students who wish to enroll in MATH 30 , MATH 30X , MATH 42 , MATH 42X , MATH 70 , MATH 71 or MATH 71X are required to take the Precalculus Proficiency Assessment (PPA). Information regarding the PPA can also be found in the Mathematics and Statistics Department website.

Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Scholars
Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Programs programs are combined bachelor’s and master’s programs at SJSU (per University Policy F19-1). Sometimes they may also satisfy the requirements for a credential. Students in these programs pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree simultaneously. These program allow students to earn graduate credit while in their junior and/or senior year, reducing the number of semesters required for completion of a master’s degree.
