Overview
The Counselor Education Department prepares individuals to work as counselors in culturally and economically diverse K-12 schools, postsecondary education settings, and community-based organizations. The department offers a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance, with specializations in K-12 School Counseling [including a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) K-12 School Counseling Credential, and a Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) authorization], Higher Education, and Professional Clinical Counseling. Faculty work closely with graduate students to build effective counseling and assessment skills; nurture reflective thinking and intercultural awareness; and provide the experiences needed to become dynamic, culturally-sustaining counselors who are committed to advocacy, social justice, and lifelong learning. Graduates are prepared to support the personal growth, holistic wellness, and healthy development of individuals and groups through counseling approaches that are strengths-based and grounded in theory, research, and effective practices.
