Overview

The mission of the College of Professional and Global Education (CPGE) is to provide access to relevant educational programs that allow individuals to gain knowledge in a dynamic and innovative environment and become engaged, productive members of an evolving global society. We aspire to be a globally recognized College that shapes the future of the workforce, preparing students for professions that exist today and those that have yet to be created. Our college is the nexus for connecting professionals, institutions, businesses and industries, locally and from around the world, to the knowledge, resources, and talents of Silicon Valley’s premier public university.

Academics

The College of Professional and Global Education offers interdisciplinary and forward-looking academic programs that prepare professionals to address the world’s increasing challenges around analyzing, managing, protecting, securing, designing, organizing, and preserving data, information, records, and archives through technology-oriented and user-focused practices. The two academic units within the College of Professional and Global Education are the Department of Applied Data Science  and the School of Information . Students have the opportunity to study full-time or part-time, learn in person or online, and pursue their education through a bachelor’s degree, master’s degrees, a credential program, and certificate programs.

Our college offers the following programs:

Professional Education

CPGE offers professional education programs to current and prospective students and professionals seeking to expand their learning and advance in their careers by applying real-world knowledge. Our programs, offered in innovative modes (online, asynchronous, and accessible off-site locations) with accessible schedules (evenings, weekends, and summers) ensure that individuals from all walks of life (traditional students, re-entrants to the workforce, career changers, and working professionals) have access to our program offerings.

An academically and financially viable unit of San José State University, CPGE is one of the most diverse (in types of programs offered), innovative, and successful units in the twenty-three campus California State University (CSU) system and has been serving the largest number of students over the past three years with the most extensive portfolio of graduate and undergraduate academic programs.

Through our College or in partnership with the seven academic colleges, we offer a total of 27 professional degree programs at the Master’s level, 2 degree completion, 1 undergraduate, 15  advanced certificates, and 3 credential programs.

In addition to our degree programs, we offer credit-earning courses to augment and complement regularly scheduled classes. Open University allows course access to non-matriculated students (including disqualified students) on a space-available basis to pursue their educational or personal enrichment goals and earn college credit.

Winter Intersession and Summer Intersession allow current SJSU students and the public an opportunity to take classes for college credit in winter and summer; we have a robust offering of courses, including General Education (GE) courses. These accelerated-format university courses are perfect for meeting prerequisites, completing GE or major course requirements, or enabling a faster pace towards graduation.

Our college also has non-credit continuing education courses to offer professionals (e.g., teachers, nurses, etc.) an opportunity to quantify their time in professional development and training activities by having the university maintain a record of their educational accomplishments for non-credit educational and career enhancement experiences.

Global Education

In our College, we are committed to internationalizing our campus in order to cultivate an environment of diversity and inclusion, and to graduate students who are prepared to live and lead in an increasingly globalized world.

Our College serves more international students than any other master’s granting university in the U.S. Our students have high success in obtaining internships and work opportunities in Silicon Valley via curriculum practical training during their studies, and once they graduate, they have opportunities to participate in OPT/STEM OPT.

Our International Student & Scholar Services office (ISSS) offers comprehensive immigration advising and co-curricular support programming for our international students and scholars. The goal of ISSS is to enhance the students’ experience in the U.S. and integrate them into our community, while also contributing to their success during their tenure at SJSU and beyond.

In addition, our Study Abroad and Away office offers an extensive portfolio of off-campus globally-focused programs that strive to meet the personal, academic, and professional goals of our students. We aim to provide programs for all SJSU students to learn and discover other cultures first-hand, including study abroad (international) and away (domestic), short-term (winter, spring, and summer breaks) and long-term (semester and year-long) options.

Our International Gateways unit provides comprehensive support services and instruction to help non-matriculated international students thrive at our University. Through International Conditional Admissions, we help students apply for Conditional Admission/Eligibility to SJSU undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Our non-credit Academic English and Test Preparation courses prepare students to meet the SJSU English language admission requirements and learn American academic culture. International students interested in studying abroad in Silicon Valley can participate in our Semester at SJSU program. In addition to regularly scheduled programs, we partner with global universities and SJSU academic departments to develop and deliver customized non-credit programs for students and professionals.

Our International House (I-House) provides a welcoming intercultural living environment to U.S. and international students and scholars affiliated with San Jose State University. The residents of I-House live together under one roof as an extended family in their home away from home at 360 S. 11th Street, in close proximity to SJSU’s main campus.  With a supportive, skillful, and dedicated staff, it offers opportunities to enhance academic success and participate in a myriad of socio-cultural activities while facilitating intercultural communication and competence.
