HIST 125 - Medieval & Early Modern Travelers, 500-1750 4 unit(s) Examines medieval and early modern travel and the experiences of travelers who traveled across different areas of the globe during the period from c.500-c.1600 as well as cross-cultural interactions both within Europe and between Europeans and peoples in Asia, Africa, India, the Americas, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean World. Topics include the travels of early medieval travelers like St. Patrick and Ibn Fadlan, medieval missions to Asia and the Mongol Empire, Marco Polo, the Vinland Sagas detailing early Norse voyages to America, descriptions of the Crusades, medieval and early modern maps and ideas of the world, the journeys of medieval pilgrims to Rome, Santiago de Compostela, and the Holy Land, the voyages of Columbus, accounts of the conquistadors, and more.
Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing or instructor consent. Grading: Letter Graded
