HIST 124 - Witchcraft & Magic in the Medieval & Early Modern World 4 unit(s) Global history of pre-modern witchcraft, magic, and witch hunts, from its origins in the ancient world to the modern world (including neo-paganism and the impact of Harry Potter), with a focus on the period c.500-c.1750. It examines the British Isles, continental Europe and Scandinavia, colonial America (including the 1692 Salem trials), Africa, the Pacific Rim, and beyond. Medieval and early modern witch hunts resulted in the trials of innumerable so-called ‘witches,’ tens of thousands of whom were executed. Living in a time of war, plague, climate change, disease, and famine, people sought explanations and placed blame for their troubles in the supernatural world.
