The 4-year 120-unit BA in Mathematics, Integrated Teacher Education Program  (BA Math ITEP) provides students with an in-depth understanding of the discipline of mathematics as well as insights and skills to analyze and work with middle school and high school urban communities to address the issues they face. The 5-year 144-unit Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Scholars  Math Program enables qualified BA Math ITEP students to simultaneously complete all the requirements for the BA, Mathematics Integrated Teacher Education Program, Math Single Subject Credential, Education Specialist Credential , and the Masters of Arts in Special Education . Students progress from undergraduate to credential to graduate status seamlessly with a simplified application process and no application fee. This SAGE Math Program in light of its integrated and combined design, can be completed in five years and provides significant cost and time savings for students.

Admission Requirements

Most frosh and transfer students are eligible to apply for the SAGE Math Program in the fall semester of Year 3. By program design, they are expected to formally advance to the two credential programs (i.e., Single Subject and Education Specialist: Mild/Moderate Support Needs ) in the fall semester of Year 3. Applications will be processed by the Mathematics Department and without an application fee. As per AA 2012-01, students will not need to apply formally for credential and graduate admission if accepted into the SAGE Math Program.

Students will be eligible to be admitted into the SAGE Math Program after:

  • Completing all lower division coursework;
  • Students must successfully complete a minimum of 60 undergraduate degree applicable units and not more than 120 undergraduate degree applicable units at the time of admission into the SAGE program;
  • Students must be enrolled in or have completed the undergraduate Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) prior to admission into the SAGE program;
  • Obtaining a Certificate of Clearance from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing;
  • Passing an admissions interview and submitting all admissions requirements into the credential programs; and
  • Meeting the Basic Skills Requirement (through coursework, CBEST, or other alternative options).

  • Students must attend an information session facilitated by the BA Math ITEP Coordinator (David Goulette).
  • Students meet with their undergraduate math advisor (Cheryl Roddick). The advisor must complete and sign the SAGE Admission and Transition Graduate Application Form (checking Step 1) and the SAGE Program Academic Career Planner (PACP). The form and planner should be routed to the registrar’s office and a copy should be included in the student application to the department. In addition to the SAGE Math Application and PACP, the following documents are to be included in the application to the department.
    • Student must include transcripts from each college attended if not viewable in the student’s MySJSU account;
    • Students must include 2 letters of recommendation addressing the applicant’s qualifications and potential for success in the SAGE Math Program. All letters must be written within the past 2 years and must include the date the letter was written, the handwritten signature of the recommender, and contact information of the recommender;
    • Students must include evidence of having completely met the Basic Skills Requirement through coursework, CBEST, or an alternative testing options by the fall semester in Year 4 before they engage in solo student teaching;
    • To enter solo student teaching in the fall semester of Year 4, students must have completed at least 80% of subject matter competence requirements in mathematics with a cumulative GPA of 2.5; and
    • Students must engage in an admissions interview with the BA Math ITEP Coordinator (David Goulette).

Applications will be processed by the Mathematics and Statistics Department and not through CalState Apply. They are processed without an application fee. All application documents should be collated into a single pdf and sent to the department via david.goulette@sjsu.edu.
