Overview

The SJSU Department of Occupational Therapy offers the oldest accredited OT program in the CSU system. Founded in 1943, the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) degree program is designed for those who have already earned a baccalaureate degree in another field. The program of study enables students to obtain the education and degree necessary to be eligible to practice as an occupational therapist. Once the MS degree in Occupational Therapy is complete, including the successful completion of the OCTH 201A  and OCTH 201B  courses, the student is eligible to sit for the national certification examination. Successful completion of the examination qualifies the candidate to apply for national certification and state licensure.

The MSOT program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 7501 Wisconsin Ave., Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. ACOTE’s telephone number. The National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) School Program Performance Data is also available.

In addition to the MSOT, SJSU now offers an entry-level Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program. The OTD program is designed to develop occupational therapy leaders, advocates, and innovators with a clear focus on community engagement and social justice for underserved populations. Once the OTD program is completed, including the successful completion of the OCTH 201AD and OCTH 201BD courses and the Capstone project, the student is eligible to sit for the national certification exam. The OTD program has full WSCUC approval and is awaiting ACOTE approval (Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 67501 Wisconsin Ave., Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. ACOTE’s telephone number is 301-652-6611.

Courses are taught by nationally recognized faculty who have clinical, research and teaching expertise across a broad range of traditional and emerging practice areas. The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) provides a myriad of social, educational and leadership opportunities. Always in high demand, our graduates are hired by private and public health care institutions and agencies.
