Overview

Researchers, chemical and materials process engineers, pharmaceutical engineers, failure analysis engineers, and polymer engineers are some of the jobs that graduates from the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering over the past 70 years obtain in Silicon Valley and beyond. Our graduates and alumni find employment in industrial sectors as diverse as oil and gas, semiconductors and microelectronics, additive manufacturing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, food process engineering, cosmetics engineering, alternative energy, carbon capture, and environmental remediation. Based on their interest, students can specialize in tracks by taking courses focused on these specializations. Our program is continually updated in consultation with industry advisors to reflect the changing needs of the society. In addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering and materials engineering, we offer undergraduate minors in materials science and engineering. Many of our graduates pursue masters of science and doctoral degrees at various universities across the country.

The Chemical Engineering Bachelor of Science degree program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Program Criteria and the Chemical, Biochemical, Biomolecular and Similarly Named Engineering Programs Program Criteria. The Materials Engineering Bachelor of Science degree program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Program Criteria and the Materials (1), Metallurgical (2), Ceramics (3) and Similarly Named Engineering Programs Program Criteria.

Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Scholars

Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Programs  programs are combined bachelor’s and master’s programs at SJSU (per University Policy F19-1). Sometimes they may also satisfy the requirements for a credential. Students in these programs pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree simultaneously. These program allow students to earn graduate credit while in their junior and/or senior year, reducing the number of semesters required for completion of a master’s degree.
