Industrial and Systems Engineering BS + MS

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Programs

The Industrial and Systems Engineering Spartan Accelerated Graduate Education (SAGE) Scholars Program enables qualified students in the Industrial and Systems Engineering, BS  (ISE) program to simultaneously complete the requirements for both the Industrial and Systems Engineering, BS and Industrial and Systems Engineering, MS  degree. Students can progress from undergraduate to graduate status seamlessly, with a simplified application process and no application fee, and complete both degrees in a year’s less time as compared to completing them separately. This will provide significant cost savings to the student.

The ISE SAGE Scholars program will allow students to be hired in better positions in leading Silicon Valley companies and to get into Ph.D. programs within 5 years of starting their Industrial and Systems Engineering, BS degree.

Summary of Degree Units
Industrial and Systems Engineering, BS 114
Industrial and Systems Engineering, MS   30

Admissions Requirements

The Industrial and Systems Engineering SAGE program allows undergraduates to begin their graduate studies while completing undergraduate requirements. SAGE programs provide students with an integrative and cohesive educational experience that combines subject matter, pedagogy and research. All SJSU SAGE programs are guided by university policy F-19.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants need to fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Must have declared the Industrial and Systems Engineering, BS major
  2. Have completed a minimum of 75 units towards the Industrial and Systems Engineering, BS degree (but no more than 120 units)
  3. Completed ENGR 100W  with a grade of B or better
  4. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, or GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 semester units
  5. Completed all lower division GE requirements
  6. Completed all lower division courses (1-99)
  7. Not have enrolled in senior project

Most native and transfer students will become eligible to apply for the SAGE program in the Spring semester of Year 3 and enter the pathway during the Summer of Year 3 and Fall of Year 4. Applications will be processed by the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department without an application fee. Students will not need to apply formally for graduate admission if accepted into this program.

Application Requirements and Processes:

  1. Students meet with their undergraduate academic advisor. The advisor must complete and sign the SAGE Application form (checking Box A) and the Course of Study Plan. The form and plan should be routed to the registrar’s office and a copy should be included in the student application to the department;
  2. Students must fill out and include an application form;
  3. Transcripts for any coursework completed at other colleges or universities not showing in the students’ MySJSU account must be included;
  4. Students must include a one-page resume that details their college-level academic, employment, and volunteer experiences. In describing a position held (employment or volunteer service), highlight the duties performed and any relevant awards or accomplishments;
  5. Students must include a 1 page personal statement that explains how they arrived at their decision to continue with Industrial and Systems Engineering, MS degree;

Applications will be processed by the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering  (NOT through CalState Apply). They are processed without an application fee. All application documents should be collated into a single pdf and sent to the department via the program coordinator.

Graduate Standing Requirements

Requirements for program continuation and advancement to candidacy in the graduate program, include:

  • Meeting every semester with an academic advisor to plan and track coursework and graduate status.
  • Once the BS degree is conferred, students meet every semester with their graduate advisor to plan a formal course of study;
  • The proposed graduate program must be approved by the graduate coordinator before the student may be considered a candidate for the MS degree.

Dismissal from Program

  • Dismissal by the ISE Department if students do not meet continuation requirements (GPA of 3.0 or higher with no individual grade below a C).
  • An exit ramp from the SAGE program to the traditional ISE BS program will be accessible for all students who have not yet converted to graduate status. Exiting can be initiated by the student for any reason. If the student opts out of, or fails to complete the Master’s degree portion of the program, the following will apply:
    • Credit earned for graduate coursework and used to complete the bachelor’s degree may not be used to satisfy unit requirements of the Master’s degree

  2. Graduate program designated GWAR course listed on SAGE Program Course of Study Plan;
  3. At least 50% of the graduate program must be 200-level courses and at least 60% of the  designated graduate courses must be letter graded.
  4. Students are converted to graduate status when they have completed 120 SAGE program-applicable units. The following University Requirements are waived or satisfied with required courses in the major: GE Areas A3, B, C2, and E, SJSU Studies (R and V) and Physical Education. Alternate courses that may satisfy these requirements are not counted in the calculation of the 120 SAGE program-applicable units.
