  • SCED 174 - Training to Teach

    This is a service learning course in which students will investigate how people learn and how to teach as they are immersed in teaching roles in the San Jose community that involve them acting as: Instructors leading small groups in science after school activities, facilitators assisting teachers with student centered activities and tutors providing personalized assistance.

  • SCED 175 - Classroom Experiences in Science Teaching


    1 units
    The goal of this hybrid online/face-to-face course is to provide students with the opportunity to complete their 45 hours of science teaching observation in California public schools while also reflecting on teaching and learning practices. The course will emphasize the multi-faceted aspects of the teaching profession and most importantly will provide a forum for sharing experiences with other students who are similarly placed. The course will fulfill pre-professional teaching observation experience required of most Single Subject Teacher Credential Programs.

    Prerequisite(s): Sophomore or upper division standing. Not available to Open University Students.

    Analysis of current trends in science curriculum and instruction. Orientation for the philosophy and scope of the program. Emphasis on development of a theory of instruction and curriculum in science with implications for practice.

    3 units
    (Formerly SCED 173) Theory and practice, instructional techniques, and materials for science in the secondary schools.

    6 hours Activity.

    Prerequisite(s): CSET Subtest I (test code 215) covers general science content and CSET Subtest II (test codes 217-220) select the subtest II that fits candidate’s area of concentration. Life Sciences (test code 217), Chemistry (test code 218), Earth and Space Sciences (test code​ 219), Physics (test code 220).
