Advanced Social Work Practice in Gerontology Certificate


The Certificate in Advanced Social Work Practice in Gerontology offers the opportunity to focus and build on developing advanced practice knowledge and skills relevant to social work practice with older adults. The coursework and field internship are to be completed in the Advanced year of the MSW program. Students can indicate their interest in participating in the Certificate program to the Graduate Student Advisors at any point from admission to the MSW program to prior to starting their planning for Advanced year courses. Currently, this certificate is only available to SJSU Master in Social Work students.

Certificate Prerequisites


All MSW  Foundation year courses are to be completed prior to moving on to the Advanced year courses for the Certificate.

  • Students in the regular 2-year program complete 32 units in the first year; Students in the Advanced Standing Program complete 9 units of summer bridge courses prior to starting the Advanced year in the fall.

Certificate Requirements (12 units)


The minimum passing grade for SCWK 250 & SCWK 251 is a “B” and a grade of “CR” for SCWK 233 and 298B in order to obtain the Certificate.
