Engineering Technology, Computer Network System Management Concentration, BS

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (formerly Industrial Technology) with a concentration in Computer Network System Management (CNSM), offered by the Department of Aviation and Technology , is designed to prepare graduates for the ever-increasing employment opportunities in the field of Computer Network Systems and Management. You will gain knowledge, skills, and practical experiences in the Internet of Things (IoT), network theory and administration, wireless communication, network security and prevention management, and cybersecurity management.

The computer network professional plans for implementation of systems, maintains the software and hardware, monitors the system for potential disturbances, analyzes problems, and develops plans for potential solutions. A computer network specialist professional is a problem solver who assures the network system is operational, secure, and protected at all times against cyber-attacks.

Computer and networking professionals are employed to facilitate the exchange and use of data in an organization in furtherance of organization goals. They also protect individuals, companies, and government organizations and their information throughout the enterprise. This requires that such professionals be knowledgeable about and familiar with constantly changing technologies and security processes. The major priority of the computer networking specialist professional is the day-to-day support that keeps the network functioning and secure. Major-Specific Graduation Requirements

All courses in the Preparation and Required in the Major (all courses in preparation, core, and concentration) must be completed with a grade of “C- or better”.

University Requirements

Students must satisfy all of the major and Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements , which includes unit, GPA, and residency requirements as well as the below identified General Education , American Institutions, Graduation Writing Assessment, and Physical Education requirements. Courses that meet Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements are noted with an area designation (see Course Abbreviations ).

Exceptions for University Graduation Requirements apply to this major.

Core Lower Division General Education (21 units)

Of the 39 units required by the university, 18 units may be satisfied by courses outlined below and approved waivers. Courses that meet GE Areas A1, A2, A3, B4, or F must be passed with a “C-” or better to meet the requirement. Consult with a major advisor for details. Of the 39 units, the following 21 units are not satisfied by the major or the American Institutions courses outlined below:

• GE Area A1 Oral Communications 3 units

• GE Area A2 Written Communication 3 units

• GE Area A3 Critical Thinking 3 units

• GE Area C1 Arts 3 units

• GE area C2 Letters 3 units

• GE Area C1 or C2 3 units

• GE Area F Ethnic Studies 3 units

Upper Division General Education

Of the 9 units required by the university, 9 units may be satisfied by coursework outlined below. Consult with major advisor for details.

American Institutions (6 units)

Complete one 6-unit sequence of American Institutions (US123) courses, which also satisfies GE Area D. Students may also satisfy the American Institutions Requirement with other courses, but these may not satisfy other GE areas.

The American Studies (AMS 1A /AMS 1B ; 12 units) and Humanities Honors (HUM 1A /HUM 1B /HUM 2A /HUM 2B ; 24 units) sequences satisfy the American Institutions Requirement and additional GE Areas (see course descriptions for details).

Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement

At SJSU, students must pass both the SJSU Writing Skills Test (WST) and a Writing in the Disciplines (100W) course. The Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) is satisfied by a course in the major. A grade of C or better (C- not accepted) is required to meet graduation requirements.
