The Doctor of Audiology program, offered by the Department of Audiology , is a 4-year course of study that includes academic courses, clinical rotations, and a doctoral research project. Audiology is an allied health profession that is concerned with 1) the science of the hearing and balance mechanisms; and 2) the clinical identification, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with hearing and balance disorders. The Doctor of Audiology program will prepare individuals to diagnose and treat hearing loss and other disorders involving the ear, advise patients on means to use and preserve their remaining hearing, and select and fit hearing aids and other devices. Coursework includes instruction in acoustics, anatomy and physiology, hearing measurement, auditory pathology, middle and inner ear analysis, vestibular analysis and rehabilitation, rehabilitation therapies and assistive technologies, and pediatric and other special applications.

Applicants from countries in which the native language is not English must achieve a minimum English-language proficiency test score as indicated on the Graduate Program Test Requirements webpage at GAPE. Requirements to Admission
The admission requirements for the Audiology doctoral program are provided in EO 1112, Article 2, Admissions. They are as follows:

Completion of a baccalaureate degree earned at an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association, or an equivalent academic preparation as determined by the appropriate campus authority (i.e., Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluation [GAPE]).

An overall GPA of 3.0 or better in all undergraduate and graduate coursework.

Completion of prerequisite courses in a) statistics; b) biological science; c) physics or chemistry; d) social or behavioral science (psych, sociology, anthropology, or others involving human behavior); and e) American Sign Language (optional but preferred).

An applicant-authored statement of purpose reflecting a commitment to audiology, including the applicant’s preparation for training in this profession, aptitude and motivation, commitment to working with diverse populations and the basis for interest in audiology and specifically, the SJSU program of study.

Three letters of recommendation.

Resume.
-
Documentation of 20 hours of observation in an audiological clinic or private practice.
Requirements for Advancement to Candidacy
Candidacy denotes that a student is fully qualified to complete the final stages of the Doctor of Audiology degree. Matriculated graduate students must submit a Petition for Advancement to Graduate Candidacy a minimum of one semester prior to graduating. General university requirements for advancement to candidacy are detailed in the Graduate Policies and Procedures section of this catalog. The University requires that all graduate students complete the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) as a condition for advancement to candidacy. For graduate courses that meet the GWAR, please refer to the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations website at www.sjsu.edu/gape. Successful completion of AUD 513 including passing the final written paper in this course with a grade of “B” or better, fulfills the GWAR in this program.
Students must complete all residency, curriculum, unit, GPA, and culminating experience requirements as outlined in the Graduation Requirements section of the Graduate Policies. Completion of the degree also requires a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
Culminating Experience
The culminating experience will be the successful defense of the student’s research project during AUD 598 .
