Survey of the fascinating and tumultuous early modern religious, political, cultural, and social history of Britain and Ireland, beginning with the end of the so-called ‘Wars of the Roses’ at the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485) up to c. 1800. Momentous changes occurred in the religion, society, and politics of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, fundamentally altering long-held ideas about the nature of authority, monarchy, female rulers, the church, and much else. Topics include life and death, belief, governance, rebellion, the exercise of power, social order and community, gender, law, popular culture, and living standards, slavery, trade, and the origins of the British Empire.

Prerequisite(s): Upper division standing or instructor consent.
