MUED 225 - Developing an Inclusive Environment in the Music Classroom 4 unit(s) Critical study of psychology, sociology theory, classroom learning environment, lesson planning, and practice and research related to effective instruction in cross-cultural and multilingual music classrooms. The course surveys the role of education in modern social, economic and political life, and provides tools for future educators to practice equitable practices that serve a diverse student body. Topics addressed include equitable teaching methods, cultural and societal factors that affect public schools, teachers, and students, and asset-based assessment techniques. Students will leave with a more clear articulation of the purpose of music education, its reflection of and ability to shape society, and how to cultivate joy, wellness, creativity, intellect, and self-determination through teaching. We will investigate various democratic and multicultural educational theories and music pedagogical practices that support diverse students, particularly those from historically marginalized groups.
