ANTH 158 - Is This Normal? Technologies, Health & Power

3 unit(s)
This case-driven seminar examines how technologies such as metrics, devices, protocols, and biotechnologies shape social, political, and biosocial life and mediate experiences of pain, mortality, and treatment uncertainty. Drawing on medical anthropology and science and technology studies (STS), students analyze the values and ideas of “normal” built into clinical tools, trace thresholds between biomedical and other healing frameworks in unequal worlds, and navigate bioethical gray zones from research to caregiving.  ANTH 11  and ANTH 108  are recommended.

Grading: Letter Graded
