AMS 169 - American Dreams, American Nightmares 3 unit(s) During the Great Depression, people of the U.S. began talking about “the American Dream” as a shared experience and aspiration of living in the U.S. This course examines various aspirations for what “America” could and should mean against the lived experiences and histories of people living within the geographical boundaries of the U.S., past and present. Using various tools of the humanities, arts, and social sciences, students interrogate identities, perspectives, power, justice, and inequality of U.S. cultures and groups.
Satisfies UD Area: 4. Self, Society, and Equality in the U.S. (Formerly Area S).
Prerequisite(s): Completion of Core General Education, and upper-division standing are prerequisites to all UD GE courses. Completion of, or co-registration in, 100W is strongly recommended. Grading: Letter Graded
