HUM 177A - Honors Society, Culture, and Science: History & Concepts 4.5 unit(s) From ancient observations of the stars to the rise of modern technology, humans have tried to understand their world through science, creativity, and culture. This course explores the interrelationship of society, culture, and various forms of science, including issues of inequality, environmental stewardship, and creative expression. How, when, and why did modern scientific perspectives and industrialization arise in relation to other sciences and perspectives from cultures around the world. Students will encounter and engage these issues using intellectual perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. 177A will include activities to introduce new upper division students to the university as a stage for knowledge production and creativity. Completion of, or co-registration in, 100W is strongly recommended
Lecture 3 hours/Seminar 1.5 hours
Satisfies UD Area: 2/5, 4, 3 (Formerly Area R,S,V) with successful completion of HUM 177A/HUM 177B sequence. HUM 177A without 177B will satisfy UD Area 3 (Area V).
Prerequisite(s): All-college GPA of 3.0 or higher. Completion of Core General Education and upper division standing are prerequisites to all SJSU studies courses. Grading: Letter Graded
