The 120-unit requirement is the standard, total number of semester credit hours needed to earn a four-year bachelor’s degree. It is split between general education, major-specific classes, and electives, requiring 40 upper-division units to graduate.
To qualify for a baccalaureate degree, students must satisfy the major degree requirements and the Undergraduate University Graduation Requirements , which include the following minimum degree requirements and 51 units of coursework:
1. Academic Unit Requirements (program total with an average 2.0 GPA - “C” or better)
2. General Education Requirements (43 units)
3. American Institutions Requirement (0-6 units) (may be satisfied in GE Areas 3B, 4, UD 3, UD 4)
4. Physical Education Requirement (0-2 units)
5. Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) 3 unit(s) (see Writing in the Disciplines )
6. Units in Residence (30 units, including 24 upper division and 12 in major)
7. Upper Division Units (40 units, including 12 upper div in major for BA, 18 upper div in major for BS)
Units from 4-Year Colleges/Universities
At least 50 of the total units required for graduation with a bachelor’s degree must be earned from 4-Year Colleges/Universities. This is commonly referred to as a maximum of 70 units of Community College academic work that may count toward the minimum 120 units needed for all baccalaureate degrees.
